The Need to Believe...
I went to a lecture by Laurie Anderson and was totally absorbed by her stories. What inspired this doodle was a conversation she recalled having with a Greek translator who was also conducting restoration work on the Parthenon. She asked him why humanity hadn't continued their meteoric developments in science and the arts. He said what began as humble sculptures given as temple offerings became a competition to see who could make the most life-like and perfect sculpture. Many were disillusioned, they left the city and sought to commune with god in nature. The need to believe trumped the need to know. Laurie loved the idea of belief, but it occurred to her that "belief" and "faith" was part of the phraseology used by modern Christian fundamentalists in America.
